NFL By the Numbers > Week 8

4 - The number of teams in the AFC with a record worse than the 3-4 Indianapolis Colts. In just their second season since winning the Lombardi Trophy, the Colts are reeling. Their loss Monday night dropped them into a three-way tie for second place in the division with Houston and Jacksonville. And all three teams are looking up at the undefeated Tennessee Titans, who thumped Peyton Manning and company Monday night to the tune of 31-21, which was much closer than the actual game.

100.5 - Passer rating for Washington's Jason Campbell on the season. Campbell passed for 328 yards Sunday, completing 23 of 28 passes for a QB rating of 127.4. He threw one touchdown pass, giving him just eight on the season; however, Campbell has yet to serve up a pick to the opposition.

209 - All-purpose yards for Brian Westbrook Sunday in the Eagles' 27-14 win against the Falcons. The anchor to the Eagles offense rushed for 167 yards on 22 carries and caught 6 passes for another 42 yards. He also scored twice on the ground. Welcome back, Mr. Westbrook.

18.6 - Average yards per reception for Steve Smith. Jake Delhomme's money target has been just that since his suspension: money. Smith hasn't grabbed more than six passes in any game this season, yet he's averaging 102 yards per game. He's had three consecutive weeks over 100 yards and he found the end zone twice on Sunday for the first time this season.

6, 163, 1 - Receptions, receiving yards, and touchdowns for rookie wide receiver Donnie Avery. The speedy wideout for the Rams was a popular target of Marc Bulger's on Sunday. Avery is starting to come into his own since snagging that deep ball against Washington in Week Six to set up the Rams game-winning field goal.

56 - Number of yards Clinton Portis needs to hit 1,000 for the season--and we've only got eight weeks in the books. That's not a bad first half of the season, huh? That's not a bad season, period. His yards per carry are way up too. He averaged 3.9 yards per carry last season. In 2008, Portis is halfway to a first down each time he touches the ball.

13, 274, 2 - Touches, total yards, and touchdowns for Leon Washington Sunday against the Kansas City Chiefs. With that awful run defense, folks were expecting Thomas Jones to have the career day, but it was Washington that stole the show. As a return man, he ran back four kickoffs for a total of 102 yards and three punts for another 71. Thanks to a 60-yard touchdown run, he netted 67 yards on three carries via the ground, and caught another three balls for 34 yards and another score through the air. If you played Washington as a bye-week fill-in you were all smiles Sunday.

12 - Fourth quarter points scored by the New York Giants Sunday afternoon in Pittsburgh. The Giants shut out the Steelers in the final quarter on their own turf. Down 14-9 they rallied with a field goal, a critical safety to tie the game, and a game-winning pass from Eli Manning to Kevin Boss with just 3:07 remaining.

12/24/2005 - That's how far back you'd have to go to find a game where Jason Witten was held to just one reception. But that's all he got Sunday against the Buccaneers: one catch for eight yards. If you have Terrell Owens or Witten, you've been hurting with Tony Romo out. And if you banked on a combination of Romo and either of his top two receiving targets, you've gone bankrupt the past two weeks.

99 - Points scored this year by the Kansas City Chiefs. Through seven games on their schedule they haven't even busted 100. That's just a shade better than 14 points per game. At the other end of the spectrum on the defensive side you have the Titans, who despite giving up 21 points to the Colts Monday night still have surrendered just 87 points all season long.
