Here are some quick hits and tasty tidbits for you to consider as you set your Week 3 fantasy lineups.
Arizona Cardinals
- Wide receiver Anquan Boldin exploded for 140 receiving yards and three touchdowns last week. Both he and running mate Larry Fitzgerald are must-starts.
- Running back Tim Hightower continues to gain touches and erode Edgerrin James’ fantasy value. If you haven’t already handcuffed Hightower to James, what are you waiting for?
- IDP note: Outside linebacker Karlos Dansby has 15 total tackles and a fumble recovery through two games.
Atlanta Falcons
- Running back Michael Turner’s ankle looks to be fine, as he’s not even listed on the injury report. Look for Turner to rebound against the Chiefs’ soft rushing D.
- Rookie quarterback Matt Ryan has struggled thus far, but he faces a good match-up this week against the Chiefs’ dinged-up secondary.
- Wideout Roddy White also gains in fantasy value this week against the inexperienced K.C. cornerbacks.
- IDP note: Defensive end John Abraham has four sacks already, and he’ll be taking dead aim on K.C. rookie signal-caller Tyler Thigpen this week.
Baltimore Ravens
- Tight end Todd Heap (wrist) is off to a slow start, but he practiced fully this week. Start him and cross your fingers.
- Running back Willis McGahee is reportedly healthy and ready to go this week. Problem is, the Ravens are saying that he won’t have a featured role. Willie Mac is a risky start until he’s able to regain his form.
Buffalo Bills
- Running back Fred Jackson is becoming a larger part of the Bills offense, especially in the passing game. Marshawn Lynch is still a top fantasy option, but keep an eye on how much action Jackson receives this week.
- IDP note: Cornerback Terrence McGee (back) missed some practice time this week due to back pain, but he’s expected to be on the field this Sunday. Watch out for rookie corner Leodis McKelvin, who could see some action as a return man this week.
Carolina Panthers
- The big news is the return of wideout Steve Smith from a two-game suspension. Smith’s presence should enhance quarterback Jake Delhomme’s fantasy value considerably.
- Head coach John Fox has confirmed that DeAngelo Williams will remain the starting running back, but rookie Jonathan Stewart is out producing Williams at this point. Neither is a great option so long as a time-share is in effect.
Chicago Bears
- Wide receiver/kick returner Devin Hester (ribs) is not expected to play this week. If Hester can’t go, the Bears DST unit would suffer a severe downgrade in fantasy appeal.
- Keep an eye on wideout Brandon Lloyd, who caught five passes for 66 yards in Week 2. If a viable fantasy wideout is to emerge in Chicago, Lloyd could be the guy.
Cincinnati Bengals
- Quarterback Carson Palmer (ankle) is expected to play - though his matchup with the tough Giants D makes him a lower-end starter this week.
- Wideouts T.J. Houshmandzadeh and Chad Ocho Cinco should also be downgraded this week against the stingy Giants pass defense.
- IDP note: Linebacker Keith Rivers (who we told you to watch out for back in Week 1) has racked up 18 total tackles in two games, and should be busy again this week against the ground-pounding Giants.
Cleveland Browns
- Wideout Braylon Edwards (shoulder) was limited in practice this week, but should play against the Ravens. Now, if he could just get over his “dropsies”, his fantasy owners would be greatly pleased.
- Wide receiver Donte Stallworth (quadriceps) did not practice this week and is unlikely to play Sunday. Stallworth with injury woes....shocking.
- Running back Jamal Lewis (ankle) was limited in practice this week but figures to start Sunday - albeit against another tough run defense.
- IDP note: Safety Sean Jones (knee) will not play this week, so look for Mike Adams to log some nice numbers in Jones’ stead.
Dallas Cowboys
- Tight end Jason Witten (shoulder) practiced fully this week, and should be good to go Sunday.
- Fullback Deon Anderson (knee) won’t play this week - meaning tailback Marion Barber will be without his lead blocker. Barber is still a fantasy stud, though.
- IDP note: Safety Roy Williams (forearm) will be out until at least Week 6 due to a fractured forearm.
Denver Broncos
- Wideout Brandon Marshall’s most recent legal troubles won’t affect his status this week - or possibly for the rest of the season.
- Running back Michael Pittman looks to be the goal line back at present, which limits the fantasy value of Selvin Young and Andre Hall. It’s tough to recommend any of this trio as a fantasy starter this week.
- Wide receiver Eddie Royal should be owned in most leagues, and he’s especially valuable in leagues that factor in return yardage.
Detroit Lions
- Wideout Calvin Johnson has become a fantasy beast, and should be started without hesitation in all fantasy leagues
- Quarterback Jon Kitna’s job appears safe, but it doesn’t look as though he’ll hang up strong fantasy numbers in the Lions’ new offense.
- IDP note: Safety Daniel Bullocks recorded 12 total tackles in his first start of the season last Sunday. He’s worth watching in deeper IDP formats.
Green Bay Packers
- Quarterback Aaron Rodgers looks like the real deal, but he’ll face a tough test against the Cowboys in Week 3.
- Running back Ryan Grant (hamstring) is probable this week, and should get the bulk of the carries against the ‘Boys.
- IDP notes: Cornerback Charles Woodson (toe) figures to play this week. Linebacker A.J. Hawk is off to a nice start, and he has even chipped in a pair of sacks.
Houston Texans
- Running back Ahman Green (knee) is still very limited by his injured knee, and rookie Steve Slaton may well get the nod this week against the tough Titans defense.
- Quarterback Matt Schaub and wideout Andre Johnson should be good to go this week.
- IDP note: Linebacker Zach Diles amassed 13 total tackles in Week 1, so the eyes of fantasy IDP leaguers everywhere will be on him this week to see if he can repeat those numbers.
Indianapolis Colts
- Tight end Dallas Clark practiced fully this week and should be back on the field come Sunday. He’s a fine play against the Jags.
- There are concerns about wideout Marvin Harrison’s lack of burst, and some think he may be nearing the end of the road. He’s still a fantasy starter, but more of a No. 3 option this week.
- Center Jeff Saturday (knee) is expected back this week, and his presence will definitely bolster the Colts’ beleaguered line.
- IDP note: Safety Bob Sanders (ankle, knee) is out this week.
Jacksonville Jaguars
- Running backs Fred Taylor (toe) and Maurice Jones-Drew (ankle) should play this week - and are solid fantasy plays against the soft Colts’ run defense.
- Quarterback David Garrard will look to rebound after two rough outings, but he’ll likely have to do it without wideout Jerry Porter (hamstring).
- Matt Jones figures to be Garrard’s favorite target this week, but he’s at best a No. 3 fantasy receiver.
Kansas City Chiefs
- Tyler Thigpen will start at quarterback for the Chiefs, but we’re not aware of a fantasy format wherein he’s a viable option.
- Tight end Tony Gonzalez and wideout Dwayne Bowe should be downgraded a bit, but both are still solid fantasy starters.
- Running back Larry Johnson is looking very much like a fantasy bust, but he’s a decent No. 2 running back this week.
Miami Dolphins
- There’s not much offensively to get excited about in Miami; Running backs Ronnie Brown and Ricky Williams are borderline flex options, but that’s about it.
- Backup quarterback Chad Henne played well in “garbage time” last week, and bears watching as Miami’s possible quarterback of the future.
Minnesota Vikings
- The big news centers around running back Adrian Peterson (hamstring), who was limited in practice this week and will be a game-time decision Sunday.
- If AP can’t go, Chester Taylor will get the start at running back, and should put up some decent numbers against the Panthers.
- Gus Frerotte will start at quarterback, and the veteran’s presence upgrades--slightly--the fantasy value of receiver Bernard Berrian (toe), who’s still a No. 4 wideout at best.
- IDP note: Cornerback Antoine Winfield has 12 total tackles, an interception and two passes defended thus far - and he’s available in many leagues.
New England Patriots
- Matt Cassel is not likely to put up Tom Brady-esque numbers anytime soon, but he’s a borderline fantasy starter against the woeful Dolphins.
- Running back Laurence Maroney (shoulder) looks like a game-time decision. If Lo-Mo can’t go, Sammy Morris figures to get the bulk of the work in a tasty matchup against the Miami D.
- Wideouts Randy Moss and Wes Welker’s fantasy value suffers a bit because of Brady’s absence, but both are still every-week starters in most fantasy leagues.
New Orleans Saints
- Don’t forget that stud wideout Marques Colston (thumb) will not play this week, and likely will miss a few more weeks.
- Running back Pierre Thomas should see a fair number of touches this week, and he’s a solid fantasy play as a flex option.
- Wideout David Patten will probably be the Saints’ top target while Colston is out, and he makes a decent flex option this week.
- IDP notes: Middle linebacker Jonathan Vilma has piled up 25 total tackles in two games, and looks to be over his knee problems. He could be a beast if he stays healthy. Linebacker Scott Fujita (knee) is not expected to play. Safety Roman Harper (hamstring) should be back this week.
New York Giants
- Running back Brandon Jacobs will shares carries again, but he has a great matchup against the Bengals this week. Start him in all formats.
- Kicker John Carney will probably get the call again this week, as Lawrence Tynes (knee) is still nursing a bum knee.
Oakland Raiders
- Running back Justin Fargas (groin) is not likely to play this week, and running back Darren McFadden (toe) is currently being slowed by a toe injury. McFadden should play, but he may cede some - or most - of his carries to Michael Bush.
- None of the Raider runners makes a particularly palatable fantasy option against the stingy Bills defense.
- Perhaps this will be the week that we have a Javon Walker (hamstring) sighting. The veteran wideout has yet to catch a pass in 2008, and should not be a part of your Week 3 fantasy plans.
Philadelphia Eagles
- Wideout Reggie Brown (hamstring) should make his 2008 season debut this week, but he’s not a great fantasy option against the Steelers.
- Brown’s presence should not downgrade DeSean Jackson a great deal - the speedy youngster is a solid fantasy starter this week.
- IDP note: Promising middle ‘backer Stewart Bradley had an off night in Week 2, and he’ll look to rebound against the Steelers this week.
Pittsburgh Steelers
- Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger (shoulder) looks to be fine, but he’ll have a tough matchup against the Philly D.
- Wideout Santonio Holmes and running back Willie Parker are good fantasy options this week - despite the unfavorable match-up.
- IDP note: Linebacker James Farrior (back) missed some practice time this week, but he should be on the field Sunday.
San Francisco 49ers
- Quarterback J.T. O’Sullivan had a nice game against Seattle last week, and could be a low-end fantasy starting option against the Lions in Week 3. He’s also a decent waiver-wire grab if you’re hurting at quarterback.
- Running back Frank Gore figures to get the rock early and often this week, making him a great fantasy play.
- IDP note: Safety Michael Lewis has 12 total tackles, one sack and a fumble recovery through two games.
Seattle Seahawks
- The ‘Hawks signed wideout Koren Robinson this week, but whether he’ll help their woeful passing game remains to be seen.
- A lack of targets relegates quarterback Matt Hasselbeck to fantasy backup status for now - unless you have no other options.
- Running back Julius Jones will start again this week in place of injured Maurice Morris, and could solidify his role as a feature back with another strong performance. Jones makes a great fantasy starter against the awful Rams' front seven.
St. Louis Rams
- Both wideout Torry Holt and quarterback Matt Bulger have had great success against Seattle during their careers, but both have sputtered out of the gate this season.
- Holt is a decent fantasy starter in just about every league, but Bulger owners should take a “wait and see” approach before counting on him to carry the water in 2008.
- Look for running back Steven Jackson to see a heavy workload this week, and his fantasy owners hope that translates into big numbers.
- Wideout Drew Bennett (foot) won’t play this week, but newly signed Eddie Kennison could make his Rams’ re-debut this Sunday.
- IDP note: Linebacker Will Witherspoon is off to a slow start, and may still be feeling the effects of a groin injury he suffered in preseason. He’s still a fantasy starter in most IDP formats.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers
- Quarterback Brian Griese makes his second consecutive start for the Bucs, and he’ll be doubly motivated to play well against his old mates in Chicago.
- Wideout Joey Galloway (foot) will not play this week, and rookie Dexter Jackson could see some time as a slot receiver as a result.
- IDP note: Linebacker Derrick Brooks (hamstring) is expected to play this week, but will likely be limited by his nagging hamstring woes. If you have a better option, use it.
Tennessee Titans
- Wideout Justin Gage (groin) will be a game-time decision this week, but he’s a viable No. 3 fantasy option if he’s able to go.
- Chris Johnson and LenDale White will continue to split time at running back, with White getting the goal line duties. Johnson is the better fantasy option at this point, but White has value in TD-heavy scoring formats.
- Quarterback Kerry Collins will start again, but the Titans’ run-heavy attack limits Collins’ fantasy worth.
Washington Redskins
- Quarterback Jason Campbell rebounded for a very nice game in Week 2, but he’s not a great fantasy option until he shows he can string a few of those kinds of performances together.
- Running back Clinton Portis is an every-week starter, and should see plenty of touches against the Cardinals.
- There’s talk that wideout Santana Moss could return punts this week, heightening his fantasy value in leagues that reward such thing.
- IDP notes: Middle linebacker London Fletcher (rib) was limited in practice this week, and missed some time for personal reasons. He is expected to be on the field Sunday. Defensive end Jason Taylor (knee) looks to be a “go” come Sunday.
