NFFC Zone > Draft Day is Over

Welcome to the NFFC Zone, the place where our CREATiVESPORTS writers will bring you inside the National Fantasy Football Championship. This past weekend 560 teams were drafted, 308 in the NFFC Main Event and 252 in the newly created NBC Sports NFFC Primetime. Drafts were conducted simultaneously in Las Vegas, Chicago, New York and Orlando. The NFFC Main Event consists of 22 leagues of 14 teams each, while the NBC Sports Event consists of 21 leagues of 12 teams each. I have a team in each event, while Brian Walton and Lori Rubinson teamed up to draft a NFFC Main Event team in New York. Over the next several weeks I will fill you in on my team, but I wanted to focus Week One on an interesting NFFC message board thread that popped up shortly after the draft.

In one of the leagues drafted in Chicago, someone identified a team that they believe drafted a collection of players far below NFFC standards, therefore creating a competitive advantage for the other 13 teams in that league. Below is the roster of the team in question, which drafted out of the #7 slot (also included is the ADP for that player from Mock Draft Central and the round-spot that player was selection in the Orlando 1 league that I participate in.

  • 1. Tom Brady (ADP 6, 1-7)
  • 2. Willie Parker (ADP 39, 3-5)
  • 3. Chad Johnson (ADP 31, 4-6)
  • 4. Tony Gonzalez (ADP 62, 6-9)
  • 5. Julius Jones (ADP 73, 7-2)
  • 6. Bobby Engram (ADP 162, 12-4)
  • 7. Rudi Johnson (ADP 88, 10-9)
  • 8. Kevin Curtis (ADP 164, 12-8)
  • 9. Ryan Torain (ADP 226, 16-2)
  • 10. James Hardy (ADP 186, 12-11)
  • 11. Marc Bulger (ADP 92, 10-6)
  • 12. Laurent Robinson (ADP 263, undrafted)
  • 13. Jaguars DEF (ADP 163, 14-11)
  • 14. Warrick Dunn (ADP 206, 14-1)
  • 15. Donald Lee (ADP 190, 15-5)
  • 16. Marty Booker (no ADP, undrafted)
  • 17. Rod Bironas (ADP 192, undrafted)
  • 18. Adrian Peterson (ADP 259, undrafted)

Is this a bad team on paper? Absolutely. Is it going to be the worst team in NFFC? I would venture to guess not. Nobody knows what the owner of this team was thinking about when they drafted it. Are they in collusion with the 13 other owners, trying to have their teams be more competitive for the $100k first prize? No chance. I am going to guess that this is a player that may have simply been in over their head on draft day–not necessarily for drafting bad players, but rather for failing to understand and anticipate where players are likely to be drafted. It is OK to like Ryan Torain and to want him on your team, but you probably did not have to take him in the 9th round when better options were available. Is the entire competitive balance of the NFFC going to be thrown off because of one team? That is doubtful, but time will tell. And as BillyWaz subsequently posted on the message board, what would people have been thinking about the team below if someone would have walked out of the 2007 draft with it?

  • 1. QB Tom Brady
  • 2. RB Jamal Lewis
  • 3. WR Braylon Edwards
  • 4. WR Wes Welker
  • 5. TE Jason Witten
  • 6. RB Fred Taylor
  • 7. WR Dwayne Bowe, etc.
