NFL By the Numbers > Week Nine

296 - Yards rushing for Minnesota Vikings rookie running back Adrian Peterson. With 30 carries, three of which went for touchdowns, Peterson ran all over the San Diego Chargers setting a new single-game rushing record in the NFL. He's a virtual shoe-in for Rookie of the Year. Just halfway through the season Peterson already has 1,036 yards rushing.

109 - Doing his best Nathan Vasher and Devin Hester impersonation, Antonio Cromartie returned a missed Ryan Longwell field goal 109 yards for a touchdown at the end of the first half. It was touted as the longest play in NFL history. Now Cromartie can sit around with Hester and Vasher and debate who just had the longest return in history.

1, 9 vs. 11, 1 - Touchdowns and interceptions the first four games of the season for Drew Brees compared to his past four games. No surprise, the Saints lost their first four games and have now won their last four games. A 4-4 record at the midway point very much has the Saints looking strong heading into the second half of the season. And if you managed to make a deal for Drew Brees when his stock price was down, you cashed in big time this past week with his 445 passing yards and three touchdowns.

36, 196, 1 - Rushing attempts, yards, and touchdowns this Sunday for Redskins running back Clinton Portis. If you haven't noticed, the New York Jets defense has looked like Swiss cheese against the run this year. If you've got a RB going against the Jets and you're on the fence about whether to play him, just do it. You'll reap the rewards.

0:00 - Time on the clock when Josh Brown kicked a 22-yard field goal to force overtime against the Browns. Despite blowing a 21-6 lead the Seahawks managed to force overtime thanks to Brown's final second boot. Thing is, Phil Dawson got the last laugh as he nailed his own final second field goal for a Cleveland win. Instead of a rare tie in the NFL, the Browns pulled off the come-from-behind victory and have the dog pound rabid with a 5-3 record.

97 vs. 33 - Buffalo Bills Points For through their first seven games of the season compared to the points they put up against the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday. JP Losman completed 24 of 34 passes, including a touchdown, and Marshawn Lynch ran for 153 yards and a touchdown. Lynch also passed for one score too. Put it all together and it's clear that the Bengals defense is just awful this season. A 2-6 record proves it. If you've got some players staring down the Bengals defense in your fantasy roster, play them, sit back, and watch the points accumulate.

7 - Number of times David Carr was sacked Sunday in Tennessee. Carr was prone to getting roughed up by opposing defenses when he played in Houston. With an improved offensive line in Carolina, you'd think that he would finally avoid getting knocked around. Not so much the case. Maybe the problem isn't the line. If this happens to keep up Carolina might be having open tryouts to fill their infirmary of a quarterback depth chart.

20, 37, 4 - Rushing attempts, rushing yards, and touchdowns for Cleveland's Jamal Lewis. He might not have had a fancy per carry average, but he found paydirt four times, and in this league, that counts for a lot.

5- Number of touchdown passes thrown by Ben Roethlisberger in the first half of Monday night's game against the Ravens. Yes, that's the Raven's defense. Roethlisberger broke free several times from potential sacks and turned them into downfield touchdown passes. He was the week's high-scorer, and he did all the damage he needed to in the first half against one of the league's best defenses.

5, 3, 1, 1, 2 - Sacks, forced fumbles, fumble recoveries, interceptions, and touchdowns scored by the Detroit Lions defense Sunday in the Motor City against the Denver Broncos. The Lions appear to be for real this season with a 6-2 record. Mike Martz has the offense clicking and spreading the ball around, and the defense is playing with a swagger. Still the Lions are chasing Brett Favre and the 7-1 Packers.
