Some notes from reviewing the top-100 NFL players in WCOFF scoring:
Only four defenses are ranked in the top-100 and none are named the Bears. The Vikings are the highest, scoring 12.33 points per game, good to rank 75.
Only four kickers are ranked among the top-100 and none are named Adam Vinatieri. Rob Bironas leads the way, scoring 11.22 points per game, good to rank 83rd. Both Bironas and Kris Brown (ranked 87) are skewed by one outstanding game that attributed over one-third of their total points.
Twenty-four quarterbacks ranked in the top 100, let by Tom Brady (top scorer overall). Opening Day free agent Derek Anderson is certainly the biggest surprise among the quarterbacks, ranking behind only Brady and Tony Romo in fantasy points per game - and ahead of Peyton Manning. Quarterbacks occupy five of the top ten overall scoring slots (Brady, Romo, Anderson, Manning, and Palmer) in a league that awards only four points for a touchdown pass and awards a point-per-reception even to running backs. Even though 24 quarterbacks are in the top-100, the gap from top to bottom is very wide – ranging from Brady’s 30.48 points-per-game down to Kurt Warner (96th overall) at 10.16 points-per-game.
Twenty-four running backs ranked in the top 100. First-round draft pick Shaun Alexander is the lowest ranked of that group, coming in at 90th place, behind Kenny Watson and Earnest Graham. People shied away from Clinton Portis on draft day like he had the plague. Now he ranks 41st overall just ahead of first round draft choices Larry Johnson (48th overall), Frank Gore (58th overall), and Willie Parker (60th overall). As “disappointing” as LaDainian Tomlinson has been considered this season, the big week six game places him sixth in overall scoring – not too bad at all. Willie Parker, Clinton Portis, Willis McGahee, and Adrian Peterson are the only running backs to score at least 10 points in all of their teams’ games.
Ten tight ends are ranked in the top 100. While it is no surprise that Antonio Gates leads the way, to find Dallas Clark second among tight ends (and 26th overall) is a surprise.
Thirty-four wide receivers in the top 100. T.J. Houshmandzadeh and Chad Johnson rank first and third respectively among wide receivers, yet Carson Palmer is only fifth among quarterbacks. It should be of little surprise that three Patriots’ wide receivers are among the top-100, with Randy Moss third overall, Wes Welker 19th overall, and Donte Stallworth at 85th. Kevin Curtis, ranked 38th overall, has been the most inconsistent wide receiver among the group. Curtis scored almost half (51.1 out of 103.6) of his points in one of his six games. Reggie Wayne, Derrick Mason, and Brandon Marshall are the only wide receivers to score at least 10 points in all of their teams’ games. Kevin Walter scored a combined six points in his first three games and 49.2 in the past two games.
