While the fantasy first round has proven to be a land mine early in the season (see Steven Jackson, Larry, Johnson, and Laurence Maroney still looking for touchdown number one), tight end has been a gold mine.

With tight end Antonio Gates selected in the third round of most 2007 fantasy drafts, the parade of positive-influence tight ends is tremendous. Gates’ numbers through five games rival any of the top round selections – 40 receptions, almost 500 yards, and three touchdowns. Jason Witten and Tony Gonzalez are both averaging just under six receptions per game. Benjamin Watson and Dallas Clark each have five touchdowns. Kellen Winslow is averaging almost five receptions for over 80 yards per game. With most leagues requiring the use of one tight end and a flex player, how viable will the strategy be to lock up two of the elite tight ends early and be able to gain a significant edge on the field?

Remember that Week Six is another bye week with a half-dozen teams staying home. Reserve all of your Buffalo Bills, Denver Broncos, Detroit Lions, Indianapolis Colts, Pittsburgh Steelers, and San Francisco 49’ers.
