Shakedown > Week Four

1. New England (4-0, Last week’s ranking: 1) Randy Moss becomes the only receiver to gain100 yards in the first four games with a new team. He leads the NFL with seven touchdowns and is already on pace to have his best season ever. So then, how is the fourth-round pick you got for Moss in that off-season trade working for you, Al Davis?

2. Indianapolis (4-0, Last week’s ranking: 2)Joseph Addai was the fourth running back taken in first round of the 2006 draft, behind Reggie Bush, Laurence Maroney and DeAngelo Williams. Does anyone really think he’s the fourth-best RB now? To make matters worse for opponents, TE Dallas Clark has taken a bigger role in the offense.

3. Dallas (4-0, Last week’s ranking: 3) – Offensive coordinator Jason Garrett has said the best part of the Dallas offense is its offensive line. Who am I to argue with a man destined to be a head coach as early as next year?

4. Green Bay (4-0, Last week’s ranking: 5) – What’s lost in the whole Brett Favre hoopla is the great play of the Packers’ offensive line. With the Green Bay running game non-existent, it’s been the great play of line that’s made Favre’s historic climb past Dan Marino possible.

5. Pittsburgh (3-1, Last week’s ranking: 4) – I guess new Arizona coach Ken Whisenhunt knew the Steelers better than you thought, Ben Roethlisberger.

6. Tennessee (2-1, Last week’s ranking: 7) – The Titans should remain a top team after a date with the Atlanta Falcons at home next Sunday.

7. Seattle (3-1, Last week’s ranking: 11) – After dominating the San Francisco 49ers, the balance of power in the NFC West remains in the great Northwest.

8. Tampa Bay (3-1, Last week’s ranking: 19) – The loss of their top running back (Carnell Williams) and left tackle (Luke Petitgout) for the season is going to greatly impact the Buccaneers. Just ask the Philadelphia Eagles.

9. Detroit (3-1, Last week’s ranking: 20) – They may have deficiencies in the secondary, but the Lions have a pair of studs in DTs Cory Redding and Shaun Rogers.

10. Denver (2-2, Last week’s ranking: 8) – Here’s a little advice for the Broncos: if your going to challenge Indianapolis, the offense needs to score touchdowns - not field goals - when the team is in the red zone.

11. Jacksonville (2-1, Last week’s ranking: 17) – The Jaguars better not take the Chiefs lightly like San Diego did.

12. Washington (2-1, Last week’s ranking: 15) – Maybe this week, Joe Gibbs will keep Clinton Portis in the most critical part of the game.

13. Baltimore (2-2, Last week’s ranking: 6) – Suddenly, the Ravens look old and slow on defense. How else do you explain Baltimore giving up big plays to the Cleveland Browns? And while were at it, Steve McNair also looks like he’s ready to retire now.

14. San Diego (1-3, Last week’s ranking: 8) – Do the Chargers miss Wade Phillips that much? What happened to that aggressive in-your face defense we all saw last season?

15. Houston (2-2, Last week’s ranking: 10) – You can’t blame the Texans’ loss against Atlanta on quarterback Matt Schaub, who went 28-of-40 for 317 yards and one touchdown pass.

16. San Francisco (2-2, Last week’s ranking: 12) – Even with Alex Smith gone for maybe a month with a right shoulder separation, I can simply believe this offense can be so inept.

17. Chicago (1-3, Last week’s ranking: 13) – Chicago fans are running out of quarterbacks to call for. Hey, maybe Jim McMahon can come out of retirement.

18. Cincinnati (1-3, Last week’s ranking: 14) – The Chad Johnson-Carson Palmer spat at the Bengals’ sideline was about the only highlight worth showing on behalf of the team.

19. Carolina (2-2, Last week’s ranking: 16) – We’re finding out that it wasn’t just the bad Houston offensive line that made David Carr bad. It sure made a believer out of Steve Smith.

20. Arizona (2-2, Last week’s ranking: 26) – The rotating QB situation in Arizona is overshadowing the great play of the defense. The Cardinals did a great job of limiting a very good Steelers’ offense.

21. N.Y. Giants (1-2, Last week’s ranking: 24) – Did it appear to you that DE Osi Umenyiora was running against air?

22. Philadelphia (1-3, Last week’s ranking: 18)OT Winston Justice must feel like he has tire marks all over his body after allowing Umenyiora to sack Donovan McNabb six times. Why, Andy Reid, you refused to slide your protection over to help Justice is beyond me.

23. Oakland (2-2, Last week’s ranking: 23) – Look, Daunte Culpepper made some plays, but it was the Raiders’ running attack that beat the Miami Dolphins.

24. New Orleans (0-3, Last week’s ranking: 22) – We’ll see if the off-week did the Saints any favors.

25. Kansas City (2-2, Last week’s ranking: 27) – He’s not garnering a lot of attention, but rookie receiver Dwayne Bowe (299 yards, three TDs) is having quite a start to his career.

26. Cleveland (2-2, Last week’s ranking: 28) – The good: The Browns are .500 after four games. The bad: They travel to New England next Sunday.

27. Buffalo (1-3, Last week’s ranking: 21) – I actually like Trent Edwards better than J.P. Losman, but let’s not get carried away. Edwards beat the Jets in his first start, a team that’s going nowhere this year.

28. N.Y. Jets (1-3, Last week’s ranking: 21) – What exactly was Chad Pennington thinking before he threw that last pass with the Jets driving for the tying field goal? I realize the guy doesn’t have a strong arm, but he is a veteran after all.

29. Atlanta (1-3, Last week’s ranking: 31) – Hey, I can’t complain about the last two games Joey Harrington’s played. The man has been on fire!

30. Minnesota (1-3, Last week’s ranking: 25)Brian Brohm, Andre’ Woodson and Matt Ryan are all good options for the Vikings, who will be looking to draft a quarterback in the first round during next year’s draft.

31. Miami (0-4, Last week’s ranking: 30) – At least RB Ronnie Brown is showing a pulse in the last two games.

32. St. Louis (0-4, Last week’s ranking: 29) – Plan on making any more silly predictions, Isaac Bruce?
