Pen Names > Gordon, Nelson, Valverde and Guardado

It’s a short column this week.  I’m on jury duty and I’m catching up on my real job in the evening, so I don’t have too much time to get in depth this week.  The trial I am on is scheduled to last into next week so there won’t be a column next Wednesday.

All stats are through Monday, August 14th.

Arizona Diamondbacks

Jose Valverde was recalled by the Diamondbacks on Monday after finally putting together a solid stretch at Triple-A.  Valverde hadn’t allowed a run in 11 of his last 12 appearances at Triple-A and had a 3.06 ERA with 18 strikeouts in 17.2 innings.  He’s not an immediate threat to Jorge Julio, who has been pitching better of late after going through a bit of a rough stretch. Valverde could work his way back into a setup role and might even get a chance to close again if he returns to the dominance he displayed early this season.  For now he’s only worth watching in most leagues but if you are out of the race in a NL keeper and have a bench spot to burn, Valverde would be a fine speculative option to fill the spot.

Kansas City Royals

The Kansas City Star reports that manager Buddy Bell has decided to implement a closing committee in Kansas City headed by Joe NelsonAmbiorix Burgos remains a candidate to close games as well, so he should be held on to by those in need of saves.  Nelson should be picked up in AL-only leagues right away.

Cincinnati Reds

Eddie Guardado has been dealing with a sore forearm of late and has also blown two of his last three save opportunities.  The arm, which is probably the cause of Guardado’s recent struggles, has forced him to miss games already this month.   The Reds will likely tread carefully as they don’t want to lose Guardado for any length of time.  Bill Bray received the save chance the last time Guardado needed a day off, so he could receive future opportunities if Guardado needs another day off down the road.

Philadelphia Phillies

Tom Gordon will undergo an MRI exam on his right shoulder Tuesday after complaining of soreness.  Manager Charlie Manuel said that Gordon will miss the rest of the series against the Mets but doesn’t think the injury is serious.  Fantasy owners should be holding their breath as Manuel is no doctor and the team hasn’t even seen the MRI yet (as of Tuesday at 5PM).  Something had definitely been wrong with Gordon lately based on his recent struggles.  Arthur Rhodes is the likely favorite for saves but Ryan Madson or Rick White could also be candidates.
