Inside the Numbers > Second Half Surprises

Did you know that over the past calendar month Adrian Gonzalez (nine) has as many home runs as Bobby Abreu (zero), Miguel Tejada (two), Derrek Lee (one), Hank Blalock (two), Victor Martinez (one), Luis Gonzalez (two) and Jonny Gomes (one) combined? Aubrey Huff has raised his average from an abysmal .197 all the way to .280 with 13 multi-hit games in that stretch. Southpaw Francisco Liriano leads all pitchers with 52 strikeouts, while fellow rookie Taylor Buchholz, has allowed just 14 hits in his past five starts. In this edition of the Inside the Numbers, we’ll take a look at some strong performers over the past 30 days from some unexpected sources.

Batters (6/16 – 7/16)

1. Aubrey Huff, 3B HOU .404 (40-for-99), 6 HR, 18 RBI, 14 R
2. Andre Eithier, OF LA .398 (33-for-83), 2 HR, 17 RBI, 10 R, 2 SB
3. Adrian Gonzalez, 1B SD .289 (30-for-104), 9 HR, 20 RBI, 16 R
4. Ray Durham, 2B SF .308 (28-for-91), 9 HR, 22 RBI, 17 R, 3 SB
5. Juan Rivera, OF LAA .338 (24-for-71), 7 HR, 18 RBI, 16 R

Ethier has been so steady over the past six weeks that he’s now an everyday player in the Dodgers outfield. For the season, he’s hitting .341/.522/.392. … Meanwhile, Rivera has been on a tear since coming off the shelf, hitting five HR in five days during one stretch. He’s a worthy starter in even the deepest mixed leagues.

6. Marcus Thames, OF DET .286 (22-for-77), 7 HR, 21 RBI, 12 R, SB
7. Mark Teahen, 3B KC .310 (26-for-84), 6 HR, 19 RBI, 20 R, SB
8. Mike Cameron, OF SD .286 (30-for-105), 7 HR, 12 RBI, 21 R, 2 SB
9. Orlando Hudson, 2B ARI .281 (25-for-89), 6 HR, 16 RBI, 17 R, SB
10. Mike Jacobs, 1B FLA .351 (27-for-77), 4 HR, 15 RBI, 12 R

Jacobs was hitting .176 with just three home runs (15-for-86) on May 7, but is quietly hitting .337 (66-for-196) with 10 HR in the past six weeks to salvage his season. The Marlins season has gone through a similar improvement, as has the year’s of Dontrelle Willis and Jeremy Hermida. … Have you seen Thames’ numbers recently? He’s quietly having a big year in Detroit, hitting .301 with 19 HR and 43 RBI – already got career-highs in both. … On May 5, K.C. option Teahen down to Triple-A Omaha because he was hitting .195/.241/.351 and playing poorly defensively. He returned four weeks later and then hit .305 (25-for-82) in June and is hitting .327 (16-for-49) with four HR, 14 RBI and 15 runs in the month of July.

11. Mike Napoli, C LAA .288 (19-for-66), 6 HR, 15 RBI, 13 R, SB
12. Jay Payton, OF OAK .304 (31-for-102), 2 HR, 21 RBI, 11 R, SB
13. Josh Barfield, 2B SD .407 (35-for-86), HR, 12 RBI, 10 R, 5 SB
14. Doug Mientkiewicz, 1B KC .317 (25-for-79), 3 HR, 20 RBI, 9 R
15. David DeJesus, OF KC .363 (37-for-102), 2 HR, 14 RBI, 21 R

There are several Royals on this list – and that’s a big reason they are 16-12 over the last month or so of action. Mientkiewicz has 20 RBI over the past 24 games and DeJesus has 21 runs scored in that stretch. …Napoli has more home runs than any other catcher over the past month (John Buck, Ramon Hernandez, Kenji Johjima, Miguel Olivo and Mike Piazza have five). Only Piazza (17) and Olivo (16) have more RBI than Napoli (15).

16. Juan Uribe, SS CHW .292 (26-for-89), 6 HR, 27 RBI, 14 R
17. Miguel Olivo, C FLA .318 (20-for-63), 5 HR, 16 RBI, 10 R
18. John Buck, C KC .296 (21-for-71), 5 HR, 15 RBI, 14 R
19. Jose Bautista, OF PIT .301 (31-for-103), 4 HR, 10 RBI, 17 R, SB
20. Emil Brown, OF KC .333 (30-for-90), HR, 20 RBI, 16 R, SB

Olivo has found a home in South Florida and is playing some good baseball behind the dish lately. He’s got 31 hits in his past 28 games in a platoon role with Matt Treanor. (Interesting stat, Olivo has walked only five times this season in 226 plate appearances, and two of those were in one game.) Uribe is known for being a streaky player throughout his career and this year is no different. Over the past 30 days, he’s got 27 RBI – only Berkman (29) and D.O. (33) have more. Uribe drove in just two runs in 23 games from April 29 through May 26.

Pitchers (6-16 through 7-16)

1. Erik Bedard, SP BAL 6-0, 1.07 ERA, 0.76 WHIP, 44-9 K-BB
2. Francisco Liriano, SP MIN 5-1, 2.14 ERA, 0.86 WHIP, 52-10 K-BB
3. Ervin Santana, SP LAA 5-0, 3.07 ERA, 1.17 WHIP, 32-19 K-BB
4. Tim Cocoran, SP TB 4-0, 1.64 ERA, 1.23 WHIP, 15-9 K-BB
5. Jon Lester, SP BOS 4-0, 2.45 ERA, 1.55 WHIP, 29-21 K-BB

John Lackey is perhaps the hottest pitcher in the game, hurling back-to-back shutouts in his past two starts, but he’s much of a marquee player to be on this list. Bedard has already set a career-high for wins (11-6). In fact, he’s matched his 2005 (6-8) and 2004 (6-10) victory totals in his past six starts alone. Corcoran has been pitching way over his head for the DRays. If you picked him up over the past couple weeks, consider offering him up in a deal now – his numbers will even out soon enough.

6. Steve Trachsel, SP NYM 5-0, 3.99 ERA, 1.50 WHIP, 11-15 K-BB
7. Chuck James, SP ATL 4-0, 4.32 ERA, 1.24 WHIP, 17-8 K-BB
8. Gil Meche, SP SEA 3-0, 2.72 ERA, 0.98 WHIP, 33-9 K-BB
9. Zach Miner, SP 4-1, 3.69 ERA, 1.43 WHIP, 22-10 K-BB
10. Taylor Buchholz, SP HOU 3-1, 3.56 ERA, 0.82 WHIP, 30-11 K-BB

It’s hard to believe Trachsel was 2-4 with a 5.10 ERA after the month of May wrapped up. Since then, he’s managed to rack up a seven-game win streak to improve his record to 9-4. He’s been the beneficiary of nice support from the NL’s best offense as the Mets average 7.5 runs in his past seven starts. Buchholz is for real – you got to love that 30-11 K-BB ratio and 0.82 WHIP. He’s holding his own currently in a four-man rotation that includes three other Hall-of-Fame candidates.
