A.L. TWO-START STUDS
Zack Greinke
(Cle, @Cle) – Everyone’s kind of forgotten about Greinke, but he’s still
excellent. He’s a dark horse Cy Young candidate for next year.
Cliff Lee (@KC,
KC) –Lee’s fantastic season has been buoyed further by a bit of luck in giving
up fewer home runs than we’d expect given his fly ball rate, but that’s not
much of a consideration against Kansas City, since they’re last in the AL in
long balls anyway. It’s not even fair that he gets to face the Royals twice.
Javier Vazquez
(Tor, Det) – He has a 175/49 K/BB for chrissakes!
A.L. TWO-START SCRUBS
Paul Byrd
(@Tex, Tor) – Paul Byrd at Texas? The
urge to watch porn isn’t the only thing Byrd is going to struggle with on that
particular trip.
John Danks
(LAA, Det) – Legitimately great season, but it looks like he might be hitting a
wall.
Carlos Silva (NYY,
@LAA) – Just no.
A.L. TWO-START WILDCARD
Dustin Nippert
(@Sea, @Oak) – If you’re looking to play the fantasy baseball version of
Russian Roulette, this is your guy.
N.L. TWO-START STUDS
Josh Johnson
(@Stl, Was) – Johnson has looked fully healthy and very good recently, and he
gets a gimme against the Nationals. Sunday’s matchup against Adam Wainwright
will be tough, though.
Tim Lincecum (@Ari,
SD) – Forget CC Sabathia, this is your NL Cy Young—and I’m a Brewers
fan.
Johan Santana
(Phi, Atl) – Is Santana underrated or overrated this season? I think a little
of both. Recently there’s been some Cy Young hype in response to the lack of
attention he’s received most of the year, and his 2.71 ERA certainly is shiny,
but did you know that his FIP is just 0.02 higher (3.70 to 3.72) than Jonathan Sanchez’, despite Sanchez having a 4.50 ERA? What a difference defense
can make. Actually, Sanchez (Pit, @SD), isn’t a bad start this week ,
considering his opponents.
N.L. TWO-START SCRUBS
Cole Hamels
(@NYM, Mil) – Huge games for the Phillies’ ace, as they face both of their
primary playoff competitors. Phanatics better hope he comes through better than
Brandon Webb did for the
Diamondbacks last week, but I’d skip him this week against the two top-five
offenses.
Randy Johnson (@LAD,
@Cin) – He’s not actually starting twice this week at all, but was scratched
from (at least) the Dodgers game with a balky back. Take him out of your lineup
if he’s in there.
Clayton Kershaw
(Ari, @Col) – The young lefty is a future superstar, but he hasn’t exactly been
impressive against the inept offenses of San Diego and Washington his last two
times out, and the thin air of Coors Field didn’t agree with his curveball the
first time they met.
N.L. TWO-START WILDCARD
Manny Parra
(SD, @Phi) – Parra has great stuff and even manages to pitch well sometimes.
You might consider starting Parra against the 98-pound Padres and the lefty
power-wielding Phillies.
