Baseball Hotpage > May 19, 2008 (Week 8)

Back again we are, heading for the first fantasy milestone: Memorial Day. Which seem to both arrive  much too quickly, and take way too long to arrive.

And, as we have been meandering, albeit forward, this season, I have noting the changes that I see in the transactions and what teams are willing to endure, contract wise.

For this week both Ben Broussard and Jim Edmonds were cut loose from Texas and San Diego, respectively. Not to mention Jacque Jones, a week earlier (and note, Jones'replacement on the Tigers, Matt Joyce whacked four homers over the last week) being kissed good-bye in Detroit.

Jones is apparently on the verge of signing with the Marlins I understand, and he could be a good fit on that infectuous team. And, Edmonds was nabbed by Chicago, who then sent the ineffective Felix Pie back down again for more seasoning (which begs when seasoning becomes too much?), and he could catch fire for a few at-bats, but for the remainder of the season, he is not much of an investment save the deepest of NL-only formats.

As for Broussard, whom I now kind of liken to Brad Wilkerson, who both played for Texas and was in the same position two weeks ago, he has not shown much over the past couple of years, but on the flip, his .275-7-29 totals over 244 at-bats are not so horrible. Ture, low RBI, but, not that bad, and with two-out, and runners in scoring position, Wilkerson hit .289, but.... But, over the second half last year Broussard hit only .254-3-12 with a .293 OBP, and on top of his awful (.158-3-8) totals of this year, at 32, Broussard will probably get a flier. Which oddly, is more than we can say for Dan Johnson at this point.

Just in time for the yan of Nick Johnson to go out with a wrist injury, the yan of Dmitri Young is activate. Actually, the partial season gig bodes well with Young, who a tasty .320-13-74 over 136 games, and well, Johnson is so tempting. How can you not like a .220 hitter with a .415 OBP. But, the guy just cannot stay healthy Don't dump him unless your league is shallow and you have an easy chance to grab him back. In the same league, Young might be available so swap them out.

Looking to some pitchers, anyone notice Doug Brocail's numbers? Brocail is 2-0, 3.18 with a save, and has allowed 22 hits over 22.2 innings. But, Brocail has 21 strikeouts to just three walks.

Chris Perez, of the Cardinals is another arm you want to take a look at. At 22, he struck out 77 over 42.2 innings split between AA Springfield and AAA Memphis. This season Perez was 1-1 with eight saves and 22 whiffs over 17.2 innings. Clocked at 100 on Saturday, Perez won his first game. He is screaming to be the Cards next closer, with Jason Isringhausen on the shelf.

I really like Fernando Nieve, of the Astros, although he is, shall we say, up-and-down. At 25, Nieve has a 3-3, 4.20 record over 40 big league games. He struck out 70, which is pretty good, but allowed 41 walks over  96 total innings, allowing 87 hits. All of which points to a kid who will get the hang, but is probably not worth a short term investment right now. At least until he gives us a reason.

Cleveland called up Michael Aubrey, who then whacked his first homer Sunday. A former first round pick (#11 overall) in 2003. Aubrey, 26, can hit, but not for much power (41 homers over 279 games), and truthfully, he was playing at AA when summoned, and 25 is old to be treading at that level, so you probably want to stay away from Aubrey as well.

And, before we bid goodbye for the week, while the players mentioned atop this piece are scrambling for a new team, both Jorge Valendia and Glendon Rusch were in the transactions over the past week, and Shawn Estes won his 100th game, pitching for the Padres. You just never know in baseball.
