Tumbling Dice > And Here We Go

So, when we left off last week I was on the verge of taking a STATS Fantasy, nee Bill James, Baseball game.

After an invite from a couple of old friends, and some discussion with some new ones, well, the league was set up last Friday morning which gave me less than 24 hours to try and set up my draft picks.

Which, I both love and hate. I love it because I want some control over who I will have, and I love it because it is fun to pour and speculate over players and numbers and rounds.

But, this time of the year, where it feels like I am scrambling in 50 directions, taking time to pour is a luxury, and one I sort of resent.

So, I did the best cursory job I could, not knowing where I drafted at any given position. What I did do was make my number one and two picks with as much clarity as possible, and then bunched as many reasonable picks between spots six and 24 (except starting pitching when you rank 48 guys) as I could.

I did this knowing I would get some high picks who would be balanced by poor ones, and I was right getting Hanley Ramirez, but also Felipe Lopez, or Grady Sizemore, but also Felix Pie.

But, I also managed some good combos with that split the middle notion, getting Ian Kinsler and Asdrubal Cabrera at second, and Mark Teixeira and Casey Kiotchman at first, and Michael Cuddyer and Jeremy Hermida (he wasn't officially hurt yet) in right field.

On the hill I remembered how valuable it can be to have a pitcher who is a starter with a relief designation as you must pitch three relievers at any given time. So, I got Brett Myers as a closer, along with George Sherrill and Kevin Correia as middle relievers.

Since I also got CJ Wilson as a closer, that allowed me to immediately deal Myers for Melky Cabrera and Oliver Perez, which allowed me to jettison Doug Davis as a left handed starter.

Which means I now have a rotation of Justin Verlander, Adam Wainwright, Ian Snell, Jake Westbrook, and Ted Lilly, augmented by the aforementioned Perez, Wilson, Sherrill and Correia.

Behind the dish I have the platoon of Carlos Ruiz and Chris Snyder, and the combo of Jason Kubel and Emil Brown patrol left, and for now the final spot belongs to Jose Bautista.

I am assuming we will have an expansion draft of four players this week, and then be held to playing 20 active guys, so, all-in-all, I like my team and its prospects. They are young, with some upside and not much of an injury factor.

And, we have an entire season to find out what they can do. And, as the season progresses, I will be writing about what I do and learn.

Again, if you are interested in playing, go to STATS Fantasy Sports.
