You know the draft season is in full swing when it is time for Greg Amrbosius' NFBC soiree. I happend to be attending the conclave in Vegas with a bunch of fantasy buds, although I tend to work the event for Greg, acting as an auctioneer and support.
And, well, if you know the ticket, you know there are not just the big drafts on Saturday in New York, Chicago, Orlando, and Las Vegas, but also a bunch of auctions on Friday, as well as a high stakes auction each Sunday.
So, I spent Friday first supporting an NL auction, and later a 15-team mixed auction.
So, this time, I want to talk a little about some of the interesting things that caught my eye during each of these events.
To start with the tough 13-team NL auction, David Wright took the honors as most expensive player at $41, followed by both Johan Santana and Jose Reyes, each at $40.
Prince Fielder copped a $35 tag, and Matt Holiday, $39.
Among the first players nominated was Michael Bourn, who fetched an expensive $21. The lesson being watch early nominees who are untested, as later on both Nyjer Morgan and Jay Bruce went for $8, while Cameron Maybin sold for $11.
A couple of other intersting paradoxes had both Justin Upton and Austin Kearns at $13, while Chris Duncan went for $16.
Go figure.
Later, during the mixed Jose Reyes went for the top price of $51, while his counterparts Jimmy Rollins and Hanley Ramirez each went for $36.
In the mixed the same Michael Bourn wentt for $14, while Bruce went for the same $8.
And, Fielder went for the same $35, while Justin Morneau, nominated after a glut of bucks had been spent, cost only $24.
Greg Maddux $6, went just before Tom Glavine ($1), but John Smoltz cost $17. Who would have thought at this point in their respective careers the dollar values would fall like that?
And, who was the last guy purchased? Barry Zito, for a $1? Last? When halfway through the auction Joe Saunders went for $2?
Like I said, go, figure.
