Bed Goes Up, Bed Goes Down > Clemen-see?

I guess I have to start this off by noting that one of the things I always tell new writers at CREATiVESPORTS is that they can write pretty much anything they want, as long as it is supported by stats and firm logic, as long as it is neither political nor offensive.

Though I suspect my own beliefs are somewhat transparent, I believe in what I like to think of as "the bay area sensibility."

I know there are many who believe those of us in Northern California are a bunch of paganistic louts who cannot wait to push our immoral ways on anyone we can get our hands on.

Well, my experience is that in the bay area, we don't care what personal beliefs of a person are. You can think or believe or do pretty much what you like. The key is that in general, you don't push your beliefs off on anyone else, and in turn, no one else pushes theirs on you. And, that is what I mean when I say "bay area sensibilities."

So, well, this week I simply have to write about the riveting senate sub-committee hearing of last week when Roger Clemens and Brian McNamee had to go toe-to-toe with our elected officials.

Obviously, we all have our alignments with this, and, I suspect over the years, I have made mine clear. That I hate to think of Clemens and his contemporaries using enhancing chemicals because simply put, they are not good for you.

But, I also understand wanting every edge you can get to obtain and keep a position in the major leagues. Similarly, I understand being an owner, and turning a blind eye. Because at the end of the day, if I pay a player $20 million for his services, I would expect him to do anything to win for me.

So, I understand guys like Clemens using guys like McNamee to help them get "that edge" that even the Rocket admitted he needed or wanted. But, I also understand that if caught, in a world like ours, guys like McNamee become the fall guy for guys like Clemens.

And, well, McNamee decided he simply would not roll over and play dead, like Barry Bonds' trainer, Greg Anderson. Although, at this point, Bonds and Anderson seem downright intelligent and dignified compared to Clemens and McNamee and the circus surrounding them.

Because like it or not, I believe McNamee. I also understand that just about everyone involved in this fiasco has lied, so it is so funny to see men struggling to convince us of their honesty and integrity. That includes, by the way, all the politicians.

But, well, in view of what Andy Pettitte has said, and Chuck Knoblauch has said, presuming McNamee's saved syringes prove what the former Clemens trainer has alleged, I think he is telling the truth. Because Clemens explanation has "holes like a Swiss cheese," as my friend Cathy would have said.

I do find it interesting in that I agree with the rather conservative faction on this, who largely view the posturing as a waste of time and energy. That is because we--the public--don't really care save the drama. Oh, we want the drama, but we also want the homers and strikeouts Clemens and Bonds and their ilk give us.

But, at this point, I also expect Clemens to be indicted and treated with the same indignation as Bonds has been. Because, like him or not, the only law Bonds broke, in theory, was in purjuring himself about his use before the same committee.

So, if the powers that be, or disgruntled fans, or self righteous among us are going designate Bonds as a sort of "Black Knight" who must be brought down, then Clemens, who is ostensibly is the "White Knight" here, also deserves equal treatment.

In fact, if McNamee's paraphrenalia and related DNA do prove his case, Clemens better expect a lot more trouble than Bonds. Because those are supposed to be the rules of equality under which we live. And, fair is fair.

So, in thinking about this, and being political, I want to ensure that I am not pointing fingers, nor do I really care what these people all want to do with their bodies and time and self righteous behaviors.

Nor do I wish to offend any of you who feel wronged by the players and the whole process. Because in the end, this will all turn out to be much ado about nothing anyway.
