Sexy Ugly. I can’t remember when I first heard the term. It was probably an episode of “Sex and the City” but since I can’t remember much these days, I can’t be sure. Sexy Ugly refers to people who are both sexy and ugly at the same time. Stay with me because I promise I will relate this back to fantasy baseball and the NFBC league.
The best way to understand Sexy Ugly is through examples. Now from a female perspective, some examples of Sexy Ugly are Mick Jagger (even men who’ve seen him live in concert agree with this one), Manu Ginobli (nose is a little off and he’s losing his hair but there is something about him), Ben Kingsley in “Sexy Beast” and Tommy Lee Jones in any movie. None are classically handsome with perfect features, but they are all somehow attractive. Don’t worry, guys. I have some examples for you.
I discussed this topic on a radio show a while back and got the following suggestions of women who are Sexy Ugly. Probably the patron saint of all women in this category is Madonna. Not pretty but definitely sexy. I would also put Angelina Jolie and Stephie Graf in the Sexy Ugly category. You can debate me on Angelina if you think she’s pretty but I think her features are a little off and yet definitely I can see the sex appeal. Okay, you get the point. So here’s the part where I seamlessly tie this article together by bringing it all back to fantasy baseball.
I play in League 5 in the NFBC with a team called Townies. If you’re paying attention to the overall NFBC standings, you will notice that team Townies also happens to lead the entire NFBC and therefore, is tracking toward a possible $100,000 payoff. But here is what may surprise you. A quick click on his roster reveals a perfect example of Sexy Ugly. Yes, you’ll find Alex Rodriguez. But other than ARod, you will find a bunch of guys that you would not expect on the top team in the overall league, let alone in my league of fifteen teams.
Here is the current starting roster that is beating everyone as I write this:
- Catchers Brian Schneider – waiver pick up in July, Greg Zaun – waiver pick up in June
- Infielders Justin Morneau – drafted in round 2, Mark Grudzielanek – waiver pick up in July, Alex Rodriguez – why didn’t he play like this on my team last season? Carlos Guillen – drafted in round 4, Mark DeRosa – drafted in round 26, Chipper Jones – drafted in round 12
- Outfielders Willie Harris – waiver pick up in June, Sammy Sosa – drafted in round 24, Willy Taveras – drafted in round 7, Torii Hunter – drafted in round 5, Bobby Abreu – drafted in round 3,
- Utility Mike Lamb – waiver pick up in June
- Pitchers Kevin Gregg – waiver pick up in May, Todd Jones – drafted in round 13, Roger Clemens – drafted in round 16, Bob Wickman – drafted in round 11, Manny Corpas – waiver pick up in May, Derek Lowe – drafted in round 14, Cole Hamels – drafted in round 8, Daisuke Matsuzaka – drafted in round 6, Josh Beckett – drafted in round 10
That is not exactly the star-studded roster you would expect to be leading the entire league. Seven of his starters were picked up off waivers, so anyone could have had them. Eight of his starters were drafted in the 10th round or later. So of the 23 starters on the Townies roster, any of the rest of us could have picked up these players if we were so inclined. But we didn’t. Or at least we didn’t pick up these players before Townies did.
Townies saw beauty or sexiness before any of the rest of us. And for that, he will possibly get a lot of money when the season ends. Goes to show you that beauty is in the eye of the fantasy player. It’s also something to keep in mind when you draft next season, and as you approach free agency each week.
