I selected out of the 13 slot, which was my top choice.
1) Brandon Phillips - a 30-30 guy up the middle.
2) B.J Upton - another near 30-30 guy up the middle
3) Brian McCann - catchers are a scarce group
4) Carlos Guillen - fills out my middle infield (Tulowitzki, Jeter, and Furcal were all gone before my pick in the 3rd round).
5) Dan Haren
6) Scott Kazmir - I had no intention of taking a second starter, but Kazmir fell due to his projected early season DL start. I am banking on just one or two missed starts.
7) Bobby Jenks - left the draft last year with zero closers
8) Todd Helton - helps my batting average
9) Kenji Johjima - gives me two sold catchers
10) Griffey - my outfield ended up a combination of really young and really old guys.
11) Edwin Encarnacion - best available 3B at the time
12) Lastings Milledge - I have been a fan for about five years. Could not have his potential break-out season be on someone else's roster.
13) Kevin Gregg - Meltzer has TWO closers!
14) Michael Cuddyer - solid numbers
15) Cameron Maybin - Another young outfielder. He can spend a month in the minors and it will be alright by me.
16) Joe Blanton - good WHIP guy
17) Dontrelle Willis - to get some strikeouts. The Blanton pick one round earlier allowed me to accept the WHIP risk.
18) Brad Wilkerson - I need one Gator on my team for good luck. Qualifies at 1B and OF.
19) Jorge Cantu - Might have been able to wait a round or two, but too much upside to risk. Sets up my ability to us Wilkerson in OF and sit Maybin.
20) Garrett Anderson - old with projectable numbers
21) Eugenio Velez - 60 steals if he earns playing time.. Worth the risk at 21.
22) Scott Olsen
23) Nick Johnson - IF depth
24) Andrew Miller - piling on Marlins
25) Jason Bergmann
26) Reggie Willits - just in case something happens to Guerrero, Hunter, Matthews, or Anderson
27) Noah Lowry - was at the draft with my son Noah
28) Chris Volstad - was surprised that he was a write-in. Will be pitching in the bigs by June
29) Jason Nix - still has a shot for the Rockies 2B job
30) Jason Motte - the ultimate write-in. Possible Cards closer later in the season when Isringhausen gets hurt. Converted from catcher last season because he could not hit and was lights-out as a pitcher. Was my son's coach for several sessions at Tommy Huttom Baseball Academy over the past couple of years.
